A reduction in population will require less energy and using fossil fuels will accordingly have reduced pollution. This means that fossil fuels can still be used as the main base energy source when there is no wind at night. It also means that supplies of fossil fuels will not run out in the near future, allowing time to find alternative solutions and put the infrastructure in place.
